Majorca Trip October 2015
November 1, 2015 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

I went on a trip with an agency to Majorca and whilst there we were shooting a number of different models.  I was working with my Fuji X-T1 and 50-140mm lens and found it to be terrific for fashion style photographs.  I particularly liked the quick and accurate focussing along with the lens compression of shooting at 200mm (35mm equivalent).  Certainly this lens is turning out to be one of my favourites.

Ibiza with Danielle Lauren
October 5, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

My trip to Ibiza was all about taking stills and video in the nightclubs and for that I was using the Lumix GH3, a camera that with a nice series of light lenses, packs a bit of a punch for such a small outfit. No Nikon gear on this trip, just m4/3 and my Fuji XE-1. Before leaving the UK I’d arranged to meet up with model Danielle Lauren for a couple of hours to shoot in San Antonio during her holiday and my work trip. With such blue skies and sea, I wanted to make the most of that by using a circular polariser and flash to underexpose the sky. So with the flash gun, a Nikon SB-900, and wireless receiver mounted on a stand and with the GH3 and wireless transmitter mounted, we set about getting some shots initially around the harbour. Once we’d finished there we went around the bay to a small beach on the rocks and with some palm trees which we used as our prop to get some nice backlit shots. So all in all a lovely afternoon with a great model. Thanks Danielle.

Experimenting with Flourescent lights
September 11, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

I’d love to be able to afford some KinoFlo flourescent lights, but at going on £1000 per unit that really is not going to be an option. So I decided to make my own with 2 x twin 5ft fittings per side of the model (or subject). Need to make a couple more for the background yet so that I can turn that white if necessary, but anyway experimented with a couple of portraits of Rachel and Amy. Not perfect yet, but see what you think.

Shooting Amber Tutton with the X-E1
July 8, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

When you’ve got great models to work with, the ideas start to flow both before the day and during.  Amber is one of those models where I definitely get “in the zone” and experiment to produce something that I think would benefit my portfolio.  The day was a little different to the norm though as I make the transition from DSLR to a mirrorless camera setup.  Here was my first model shoot with the Fuji X-E1 and it’s APS-C sensor. I have the Lumix GH3 camera, a micro 4/3rds sensor and fantastic camera for stills and particularly for video (which is why I got it in the first place).  Presently I have the Olympus 45mm f1.8 lens and the Lumix 20mm f1.7 lens, both great lenses and so compact in size.  My next logical purchase was to get the 12-35mm f2.8 Lumix, but priced at £899 needed careful consideration before taking the leap.    But here’s the rub that made me consider an alternative solution. I was finding the Lumix a little noisy for some of the natural light stills work that I do in the studio.  When I say noisy, I mean probably from about 800 ISO upwards and […]

Sophie Dawn
June 27, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

After a couple of months of planning, obtaining the props and getting the styling right, it was great to finally shoot with Sophie Dawn and Di Dakin providing the makeup.  We were supposed to be shooting back in May but the day we set aside was a snowy day with a good 4 inches or so of snow laid down.  Were we supposed to be in springtime or the depths of winter? It was now towards the end of June and I was hoping for sunshine and warmth so we could spend more time outside.  Instead we had cold winds and rain showers so we stopped inside the studio for much of the time.  But we were determined to shoot outside in the woods for the native American headdress shots.  So I hope you like a few of the photos we worked on during the day.

Amber Tutton – Marketplace
May 21, 2013 by GordonM in Blog 0 Comments

We had Amber up again for one of her studio days and I took the chance to shoot with her for an hour at the end of the day.  Perfect time really as I wanted to get the light behind her to rimlight her hair.  With a bit of toning applied in Lightroom during editing, a nice set of photos resulted. AND it was my first real test of my Panasonic Lumix GH3 that I’ve got along with the Olympus Zuiko 45mm f1.8 as the lens.  I’m really pleased with that camera and I feel it was quite liberating using the smaller camera rather than my usual DSLR kit.
