Photoshoot in Scarborough with WikkyC

I’d seen Wiktoria on Instagram and liked her look and thought she would suit some lifestyle/commercial photos I had in mind.  I found out that she lived in Scarborough, which for me was about a two hour drive.  I’d not been to Scarborough for a LONG time so thought it would be nice to go back there for a visit.  However, I didn’t know any suitable outside locations for a photoshoot and what with it being February in the UK, I had to cover my options in case the weather turned out bad. Anyway, as usual Google and Googlemaps comes to my aid, so I started to do a photo walkthrough on the map and came across some colourful beach huts on the North Bay.  Whilst not quite on the beach, there were on the promenade so I thought they would definitely be an option.  My style of photography is such that they would just be a bit of blurred colour and highlight in the background anyway as I got Wiktoria to smile, pose and generally have fun in a lifestyley sort of way.  There was also a nearby park that we could use for a second look for the […]

Shoot with Millie

Along with another photographer I met Millie when we were contracted to shoot some ball gowns for the catalogue and website of a large, local company who specialised in dresses for proms, weddings and other big occasions. The shoot was in a big mansion and the models we were using were all Miss Great Britain finalists. Millie was one of the models. Millie was fairly local, the other two models were from Scotland and from Essex. So we chatted with Millie about getting together after the catalogue shoot to get some more photos for her portfolio. And so we met up about a month or so later, on a nice bright sunny day and set off for a wander round the park of the town. As well as shooting amongst the greenery, there was a local funfair in town … although closed during the day when we were shooting … but one of the stallholders welcomed us in and switched on the lights on one of the main rides. So all in all, a result, we had some fun chatting and shooting some photos.

Lifestyle Cafe Shoot

I love making lifestyle photos, I just like the fun and brightness of not just taking the photos but also seeing the results. So it was great to work with local photographer Shaun Bailey and two local models Jess and Olivia to produce some photos that would be used in the portfolios but also on the cafe’s social media channels. Cuckoo Wharf Coffee shop is a lovely cafe right in the middle of Worksop and right next to the canal bank. It’s been done out nicely inside and outside and so a nice bright day, it was the ideal time to get some great photos inside and out. This was the first test of the new Sony A7iii mirrorless camera that I’d just recently bought and so was looking forward to seeing not just the results, but also to get a feel for the ergonomics and speed of operation as to how it handled in my hands. It thankfully was fine, probably not a fast to work around as my Fuji X-T2 and Nikon DSLR cameras, but definitely something that will improve with more practice.

Shoot with KatieMack

A photographer friend had been shooting with a new model on the scene and he recommended that we shoot with one another to get another style of work in her portfolio and mine. I thought that Katie, who is Miss Doncaster 2018, had a great look that would suit some lifestyle/fashion photos. So I set about trying to think of a location that was easy for us, that turned out to be the main street in Bawtry. There was a nice little arcade and the main street was very colourful with shops, hotels and cafes, all adorned with various hanging baskets and tubs with flowers in full bloom. I was shooting with the Nikon D500 DSLR, the nifty-fifty 50mm f1.8 AFS and the 85mm f1.8 AFS lenses. All together a nice, compact, fast combination of camera and lenses so we could move around town swiftly. I parked up my campervan in the car park on the main street, right outside a dress shop … the significance of that I’ll tell you about later. The camper made for an ideal changing room for Katie. So we did the arcade first, some brisk walking shots didn’t phase the D500 at all in […]

Photos with Emma Kate Dawson
June 20, 2018 by GordonM in Blog, fashion, people, portrait 0 Comments

Whilst on the video trip with Emma, we took the opportunity to shoot some photos in the park and surrounding area. I wanted to try out some new ideas that were completely informal rather than posed and we both had fun trying them out. Shot with a Nikon D610 and 85mm f1.8 lens most of the time, we strolled around the park near South Shields beach and also ventured into the fun fair too. Got told off when we were in the fun fair though because I had what looked like a professional camera, probably should have used my iPhone. It’s not an uncommon scenario I know with photographers and their DSLRs. But we complied nicely and stopped shooting there and just moved on.

’60s Project
March 21, 2018 by GordonM in Blog, fashion, Portfolio 0 Comments

The ’60s is a fascinating era for initiating a change in fashion photography.  So to me that is a great reason to start a new photography project, trying to embrace many of the hallmark looks from the time. For me starting any project involves lots of research and my research mostly started in the autumn of last year.  A good start was looking at the icons of that time ….. David Bailey, Jean Shrimpton, Brian Duffy, Twiggy …… to just name a few.  Then of course there were the locations, more often than not around Carnaby Street in London, although of course David Bailey took Jean Shrimpton to Manhattan, New York to deliver a photoshoot that kicked Vogue magazine into a more modern publication that needed to echo the younger, more liberated, generation of the time.   If you are interested, you must see the film We’ll Take Manhattan that tells (whilst probably embellishing) this story.   If you haven’t time to watch the video then you can check out the photos from that trip in this Guardian article. So watching that Manhattan film and also looking at a number of youtube videos on documentaries about Twiggy, other photographers and fashion from […]
